Marathon Press had the distinct privilege of printing the Phil Ponder book last year for Donald Chambers in the Nashville area, Donald knew of Marathon from his Picture This! Creative Framing and Gallery business so he reached out to have us assist on the print production. Phil Ponder, a famous Nashville artist of 40 + years was a client of Donald’s shop.
Last week, I received a nice note from Donald:
Hi Martin
I thought you might be interested, our book “Phil Ponder” won the silver medal in the Southeast Regional Non-fiction category of the Ippy Awards, independent book publishers awards. I’m pretty proud and excited and wanted to extend my thanks to you again for all the help you provided during the printing process.
sincerely
Donald Chambers
A bit of background on Phil Ponder is required here. Phil Ponder’s career as an artist has spanned close to 50 years.
Since 1979, Phil Ponder has painted historic structures in Middle Tennessee. He is best known for his limited edition prints of skylines and famous buildings. His unique style is accomplished through a combination of pen and ink/watercolor techniques emphasizing great detail and warmth of color.
The project for the Phil Ponder Book originally started as a 120 page collection of images that morphed over a few months into a 388 page collection, 12 x 9″ cloth bound edition with dustjacket. 1000 copies were produced.
Shortly after we had shipped out books for the initial book launches, Donald had sent me this nice note
Martin
Thanks so much, just wanted to say again what a pleasure it was working with you and Marathon Press. I’ve been after Mr. Ponder for several years to do this book and he finally relented this year. Mr. Ponder is 88 and I can honestly say this has been the highlight of his 42 year art career. We had another show this weekend and the local news did a feature on Mr. Ponder and the book. So to say that you and your company had a large part in this is an understatement, your help on this project was invaluable and I will be forever grateful, I hope to be able to work with you again sometime.
Sincerely
Donald
All we can say here at Marathon is a big Thank You back! We wish Donald and Phil on the award along with the wonderful success they have had on this special edition. It was a pleasure to work with them!
